10-Day Oman Itinerary from Muscat (With a Last-Minute UAE Add-On)

10-Day Oman Itinerary from India (Muscat Base + UAE Add-On)

A relaxed Oman itinerary based in Muscat, covering wadis, mountains, forts and deserts β€”
with a spontaneous Abu Dhabi & Dubai add-on and real travel lessons from the road.

Our Oman trip didn’t start with a fixed plan.
It started casually β€” and slowly turned into one of the most balanced
and peaceful international trips we’ve done from India.

🧭 Trip Snapshot

  • Total duration: 10 days
  • Base city: Muscat
  • Travel style: Guided day trips + slow travel
  • Countries covered: Oman (+ UAE add-on)
  • Best time: November to February

Why We Chose Muscat as Our Only Base

Instead of changing hotels every 1–2 days, we stayed only in Muscat
and explored Oman through guided day trips.
This kept the journey comfortable while still covering
mountains, wadis, forts and heritage towns.

  • No daily packing and unpacking
  • Easy logistics with tours
  • Food delivery and groceries worked smoothly

Day 1 – Arrival in Muscat & Local Sightseeing

After landing in Muscat, we kept the first evening intentionally light.
With a local guide, we explored:

  • Beach viewpoints
  • Mutrah Souq
  • Al Alam Palace
  • A traditional Omani sweet shop

Day 2 – Nizwa & Jebel Akhdar (Full-Day Guided Tour)

This was one of the most rewarding days of the trip.
We covered Nizwa Fort, local souqs and the stunning mountain landscapes
of Jebel Akhdar.

A guided tour made this stress-free without driving steep mountain roads ourselves.

Day 3 – Wadi Shab & Bimmah Sinkhole

One of Oman’s most scenic experiences.
A short hike through Wadi Shab leads to emerald water pools,
followed by a refreshing stop at Bimmah Sinkhole.

Comfortable walking shoes and water shoes are highly recommended.

Days 4–8 – Slow Travel, Culture & Landscapes

The remaining days were deliberately slower β€” mixing sightseeing with rest.

  • Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque & Royal Opera House
  • Beach cafΓ©s and evening corniche walks
  • Optional Wahiba Sands desert drive
  • Traditional villages and mountain viewpoints

Last-Minute UAE Add-On (Abu Dhabi β†’ Dubai)

While roaming the streets of Oman, we decided to add UAE at the last minute.

We landed early morning in Abu Dhabi, waited for Ferrari World to open,
stored our luggage manually near the park,
and spent most of the day dealing with heavy crowds.

In the evening, we took an Uber to Dubai (β‚Ή3,500–4,000, ~2 hours due to traffic),
visited Jumeirah Beach, had dinner and returned late to our hotel.

When Travel Insurance Actually Helped

Due to an emergency back home, we had to cut the trip short
and return to India earlier than planned.

Our travel insurance helped us recover:

  • Unused flights
  • Cancelled hotel bookings
  • Last-minute return tickets

This single incident recovered more money than the entire insurance premium β€”
something many travellers underestimate.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in Oman

  • Trying to rush through too many places
  • Not planning transport in advance
  • Assuming Oman is backpacker-cheap
  • Skipping buffer days

Is This Oman Itinerary Right for You?

βœ… Yes, if you:

  • Prefer calm, scenic destinations
  • Like guided comfort over driving stress
  • Want a short but meaningful international trip

❌ Skip if you:

  • Want nightlife and party culture
  • Expect ultra-cheap backpacking travel

Final Thoughts

Oman is best experienced slowly.
Basing yourself in Muscat and exploring through day trips
keeps the journey calm, flexible and deeply rewarding.
